Take care of the safety of the billions of folks living on the Earth, and then set up a lifeboat on Mars which could only save a few...

I guess you missed Leaonard David's interview over at space.com with the head of the NASA Langley NEO study team...

Once again, the only convenient source of funds to finance the improvement of Earth based NEO detection efforts is some of the Mars money...
