Hi Chris,
I thought the same thing at first...
...until I plugged in the historic fact that Von Braun was writing a book about going to mars as soon as he was interned. That and the fact that six years later a beefed up version appears in Collier's with Von Braun composing text and Bonestell the pictures, which means they must have likely developed a relationship sometime before.
What would Bonestell have to gain about composing such a story? Asides from selling his artwork? And why then pick Mars? Why not just the Moon, since that was equally fantastic in 1946?
While the astronomer references imply a working astronomers knowledge - the rocket bit about circling the earth to build breakaway momentum seemed like vintage Von Braun.
You may be right, and Bonestell did it all - but instead of attributing text and images to Bonestell - they sort of awkwardly credit only the images. No Byline was given to Bonestell.
So it's still an curious mystery in my book. If Bonestell did write it - by picking 1986 - he eerily forecast the year of his own 'departure'.
Best wishes,
