This raising of height of the tropopause *could* possibly be a "natural" cooling mechansism. It would be interesting if some numbers for the quantity of heat shed per raised height could be determined. I wouldn't be too surprised if the determined number dwarfed heat input due to human activity. It's also possible that it's a "runaway effect" for warming or that it's a warming effect.
Note: If the increase in height was due to the Sun max/min cycle then it should lower in next few years. And it probably isn't a cooling mechanism but more likely one of the mechanisms for global warming [perhaps what Tom orginally meant by "tropopause height might be a cause instead of an effect"].
