Don't even get me started on 'cop-speak'.
They can't just say "We went to the house." It's "We responded to the incident."
If you're proud you're a snob, you're not a real snob. If you're a real snob, you think you're just "plain folks". There's nothing wrong with speaking in a regional, ethnic, or class accent. It's when you fake one so you'll sound more authentic is when its phony.
Although to be fair, much of this happens subconsciously, perhaps even for self-preservation. I was brought up speaking redneck, and when I'm around rednecks, I slip right back into the accent without meaning to, even though it sounds like fingernails scraping on on a blackboard to me.
Yeah, that's BLACKboard, not WHITEboard And yes, I said 'redneck'. I don't have to pretend I'm just plain folks. I'm not a racist, but I'm definitely a cultural chauvinist, and proud of it.
