To preface: I'm a librarian of Irish descent. Whammies # 1 & 2. The librarian in me preserves. The Irish in me remembers that knowledge is power, and not so very long ago, reading while Catholic was discouraged by statute in the land most of my family came from. The object of such laws was the deracination of the native population, but cultural memory, combined with epic stubbornness, prevented that from happening.
The problem, Tom, is not cultural memory itself, but carrying a grudge. Lack of cultural memory is like having no medical records of your family. Didn't somebody else have this illness, and what was the outcome? Don't know? Too bad: we'll have to learn it all over again, and use the guinea pigs.
Let's not waste our time like that.
