Re: A different kind of article

There are a number of religions whose rules forbid displaying a flag. I have absolutely no objection to this at all. The people abusing the storeowners for this decision are wrong. There is no evidence that these people are anti-American--in fact, the reverse seems true. Note that they are not intolerant of their employees displaying a flag pin on their persons.

In Pennsylvania, I'm surprised this hasn't come up more often.

For the record, I have no real moral objection to someone not displaying a flag for any of the following reasons: No place to put one, too expensive, a lot of trouble to take it up and put it down every night without forgetting and leaving it in the dark*, it clashes with the rose garden, and just too damn lazy to go out and get one, and many others.

I do have an objection to someone who does not display the flag because he thinks America is evil and an oppressor. There are not many of these, but there are enough. This was the root of the whole "flag waving" issue on this board a few weeks ago. In this case the flag is just a symptom, not the main issue. Of course, in a free country, he can have any opinion he wants. And in a free country I can "flame" him into the next county.

Incidentally, as mentioned in the article, there are a number of religions that forbid military participation from their members as well. The Quakers come to mind. However, historically they have proved their courage and supported and served their nation in many other ways.

*The main reason mine is not out every day like it ought to be (blush)!
