Avoiding the draft

The draft has never been popular and many (including myself) had no passion to go to Vietnam as a draftee. The options of joining the reserve, ROTC or National Guard are very different from deferment, much less fleeing to Canada and/or voicing anti-American sentiments. Each of the reserve options leave open the possibility of active service and in fact some reservist were called in the Vietnam era I believe.

Regarding some specifics of this post:

Richard Armey - Sought college deferment, too smart to die.
Bill Bennett - Sought graduate school deferment, too smart to die.
Dick Cheney - Sought graduate school deferment, too smart to die.
Tom DeLay - - Sought college deferment, too smart to die.
Newt Gingrich - Sought graduate school deferment, too smart to die.
Phil Gramm - Sought marriage deferment, too loved to die.
Rush Limbaugh - Sought deferment for ingrown hair follicle on his ass.
Trent Lott - Sought deferment, didn't want to muss his hair.
P.J. O'Rourke - Sought deferment, too stoned.
Kenneth Starr – Sought deferment for psoriasis.
George Will - Sought deferment, too much of a wussy.

Now, how do statements like this further his argument? Obviously the reasons stated are sarcastic. Since this is obvious, we are left to wonder, did they really seek a deferment? Was it granted? What was the real reason for the deferment?

Regarding John Wayne, only an idiot would question his patriotism instead of his intellect. He was over aged for the draft and it is my understanding that he had to be convinced by Roosevelt that he could serve the country better as an actor than a military volunteer.

Is any of this getting through to you Greg? If you are truly the open minded, un-opinionated soul that you claim to be, the continuous discrediting of the left-wing extremist blather that you post should be getting your attention and I would expect an occasional posting critical of the elitist left wing fascism that, up to now, you appear to favor.
