because the same stuff can be turned against Democrats just as easily. Besides, during the Clinton misAdministration, we were assurred by the Left that military service didn't matter. I guess you believe that only applies to Republicans, huh?
Using info provided by Roll Call Magazine about which members of Congress served in the military, here are some basic numbers:
There are 435 members of the House of Representatives, with the Republicans holding a slim lead. Of those 435 members, only 83 Republicans and 55 Democrats reported serving in the military. Of those, 21 Republicans and 15 Democrats served only in the National Guard or Reserves. Based on the data provided, 9 Republicans and 9 Democrats served in the Guard or Reserves during wartime. If you're going to claim Bush hid from the draft by getting a slot in the National Guard, then you also have to condemn Dick Gephart, Charlie Gonzales, and the others who did the same thing. You wouldn't want to be a hypocrit, now would you.
The numbers are somewhat different in the Senate. Of the 100 members of the Senate (50 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and 1 turncoat), 25 Republicans and 18 Democrats served in the military. Of those, 3 Republicans and 3 Democrats only served in the Guard or Reserves with two each going in during wartime.
Interesting enough, Strom Thurman of the Senate only served in the Reserves. He joined in 1924!
As for John Wayne, he was born on May 26, 1907. When American was attacked at Pearl Harbor, he was 34 years old. Not very many 34 year olds were drafted.
