>"The contra freedom fighters, with the help of the USA defeated the communist Saninistas, goober.
At the first election, they elected contra backers, and in the latest, turned back the Sandinista leader Ortega with a humiliating defeat.
Facts are tough on people who think contrials are secret government plots to poison them."
Daniel Ortega was the legitimate head of government in Nicaragua, having been elected. In turn, he allowed free elections and was defeated by Mrs. Chamoro, wife of the owner of the largest newspaper in that country. This election was held after the US directly intervened in the affairs of a soverign state with money, arms, troops, CIA, and direct military intervention in the mining of the harbors of Nicaragua.
For this action the World Court of Justice issued an order of condemnation to the United States.
This was a shameful example of the world's most powerful captialistic, democratic state not only ignoring international law, breaking treaty agreements (which is the breaking of national as well as international law), but also committing an act of war (undeclared) by minig the harbors of Nicaragua. These actions were the use of threats and force to effect US policy.
If any other nation had used the same tactics against Nicaragua, the US would have labeled these illegal actions terrorism. The hiring and equipping of the Contras by the US in their campaign against a soverign government was state sponsored terrorism.
Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger reacted by rejecting US participation and on April 10, 1984 the US Senate voted eighty-four to twelve to condem the US participation in this mining.
Either the CIA actions were kept unknown to the Dept. of Defense, or the honorable cabinet member lied to the press in his statement.
The whole situation doesn't sound like one to be too proud of, goober.
