I dunno about San Francisco but in D.C. there were more than the hundreds the Wash Post claimed attended in the Port-a-poty line alone. And I dont think 100,000 like I heard on Pacifica either.
I would guess there were about 10-20,000 people on the mall who I would associate with the peace march 2 hours before it was to start when I left the area. Also, I witnessed several 6 car trains in the Metro station packed with banner toting wool sweater and birkenstock folks traveling to the mall. This was during a ~15 min wait in the Smithsonian station.
Each side is trying to spin this think up and down but one thing is sure from my perspective. It wasn't a million man march or as large as the Vietnam war gatherings i've seen pictures of, but there we're a ****load of people there for the protest.
I was in town for the marathon the next day, and the Air and Space museum which had Apollo 13 on IMAX unike anywhere here in Houston.
