<Setting food and drug safety and effectiveness standards, need not have anything to do with free market economics.
If Americans are offered healthier foods from which to choose, Americans will eat healthier foods.
Damn it, such foods ARE offered. Everywhere. Eat at Fresh Choice. If people prefer the fatty stuff, who the hell are you to decide that they should be forced to do otherwise? These people are not your pets. I swear, the paternalism is so completely woven into your mental makeup that I don't think you even see it.
If McDonalds, In-And-Out, Wendy's, Coco's, Chilli's, etc. all cut one percent of fat from their foods, it would be a good start, and it would not hurt anyone financially (except the lard providers).
For the record, they have long ago cut the fat to the minimum that will sell. Non-fat foods don't taste as good, and they don't sell. Low fat fries don't sell. Veggieburgers don't sell. For the love of Mike, nobody goes to McDonalds for health food! If you don't want the fat, DON'T EAT THERE! Or order the goddam Chef Salad without dressing. Or tell them to hold the cheese, or not to salt the fries. Are you a competent adult, or what?
The typical liberal response to this is, "of COURSE I don't eat there, but what about all those poor, benighted people who do? They don't know any better, not being as good and wise as I am. They need to be helped for their own good!" Cripes.
An aside: the Holy Grail of the Left is nationalized medical care, which would give them what they've always wanted: the universal weapon to use in cases like this. One can see that if the government were providing the medical care, the rationale for total state control of our foods and eating habits (as well as just about everything else) would be quite obvious.
