You need to rewrite the Bible some time, so us mortals can get the truth about that, too.
All hogwash aside, my personal feeling is that this stuff about Lott is a bit overblown. Showing support for Thurmond (as odious as I find him) is not grounds for lynching.
Lott may have hidden racist feelings that I would object to, but I really don't see that he expressed them here. Maybe future clarifications will urge me to jump on this bandwagon.
My advice is to try not to take things like this too seriously. In partisan politics, rule #1 is to cast your opponents in the worst possible light.
