A couple decided to open a bar for non-smokers. They got a lot of free publicity on the news and had a prominent "No Smoking Allowed" sign on the door.
Less than 2 months later, they'd removed the word "No" from the sign. It now read "Smoking Allowed". About a month later, they went out of business.
It seems that a high percentage of people who go to bars are also smokers. Since they didn't feel welcome in their bar, they stayed away even after smoking was allowed. There apparently weren't enough non-smokering customers to keep the bar open.
It was their decision to open a non-smoking bar. It was the customers' decision to stay away. And that's how it should be.
Some have argued that in some cities that outlawed smoking in public places, business actually increased after the ban. I can see how that can happen. I love stand up comedy and we have a pretty good comedy club here. However, it's a very smoky place so I don't go there. I'd be more likely to attend if they either got rid of the smoking or at the very least improved the ventilation. Since they have not, I don't attend. I still stand by the business owner's right to make that decision without being cohersed by the government. As for me, there's always the Comedy channel and BET (they have some very good black comedians on just about every night.)
