The ideal combination:
Either a mature nuclear energy industry to generate electricity for HO2 disassocation very cheaply, or a breakthrough in a catalyst for the same, or a major breakthrough in solar cell technologies.
To use fossil fuels to generate H2 is foolishness. The BTU cost and pollution cost is worse than what we are doing now.
If we did learn how to make good biodiesel and jet-A from veg oils, that would be a good thing as well.
The nuke solution is at hand, if we had the will to grasp it.
The bio-sourced liquid fuels are nearly as close.
