As a means for total energy distribution, the idea has a lot of merit

A significant percentage of all electricity generated is lost in distribution. If, instead of sending electricity down a high tension power line, we sent the energy in the form of hydrogen down a pipeline, then we'd have significantly lower losses. One substancial problem would be creating the necessary pipelines to pump all of that hydrogen. It would cost billions as opposed to an existing infrastructure of power lines. The increase in efficiency would have to be pretty substancial to justify the investment. I've love to see a good analysis of the options.
