Re: New Structure

I spent a lot of time in that building when I lived in Minneapolis. When it was built, it towered over the rest of the city, dwarfing the former tallest building, the Foshay Tower. (Spend a little time at this link...it's worth it) This is no longer true, as several other large skyscrapers have been built since I lived there.

Old skyline. The Foshay Tower is the shorter skyscraper on the right in the top picture.

In the bottom picture of the old skyline, one can see one of those cigarette billboards in the process of destroying Western civilization. In the center, to the right of the IDS building is the Northwest Bank building, distinguished not by its height but by the "N W" sign on top. At the top of this sign is the famous "Weather Ball," a sphere lit from within that would change color depending on the forecast. Until I found the link, I had no idea the old bank had burned down.

The Crystal Court was a great place to hang out. The IDS center was one of the nodes of a vast interconnected skyway system that allowed you to move through most of downtown Minneapolis without ever going out into the cold. A great city when I was in college at the U. of Minn.
