Every single dollar kept in the private sector adds to the economy. Every dollar tossed into the government gets spent, whether it needs to be or not, and little of it adds to economic growth.
To a Democrat, there is NEVER a good time for tax cuts. We have to keep in mind that a year or so ago, when all the projections showed surpluses as far as the eye could see, the Democrats were STILL fighting tax cuts tooth and nail, which shows that the deficit never was the main issue.
If you think the Democratic position would be one bit different if the Iraqi war did not exist, I've got a bridge to sell you.
What this does, however, is put the Democrats into a position of co-author of the economic plan. Had the cut passed unmolested, any economic failure in 2004 could have been placed at the doorstep of the Republicans. Now, if the economy is still struggling, Bush can just say, "Gee, if only we'd passed my original tax cut."
