What's really a hoot is the sudden conversion of the Democrats to "deficit hawks" after literally years of laughing down the Republicans every time the subject of a balanced budget came up.
While the Democrats cry crocodile tears over the cost of Iraq, it's worth remembering that America dumps $75 billion (the current cost of the war) on mandatory wealth redistribution about every three weeks. Some kinds of spending seem to bother Democrats more than others.
Still waiting for a Democrat to stand up and express concern about the deficits that may result from a Medicare prescription drug program. The original Democratic proposal--$594 billion over eight years, eats the cost of the Iraq war once a year all by itself. And that's even making the extremely generous assumption the costs won't balloon out of all proportions like the original Medicare did.
One assumes deficits don't bother Democrats in certain areas, because they think that spending money on social programs is more "important" than other things.
Surely the Democrats would argue that money spent on the poor and elderly is better for America than money spent on a war in Iraq. However, money spent on a war to squash a wellspring of terrorism--Afghanistan included--pays off too.
It is worth noting that the economic impact of the WTC attack in New York City ALONE was estimated at close to $100 billion.
