I sometimes forget that most people have not studied military history
I've been studying it for over 30 years. The "Phoney War" was a term that a lot of people themselves used at the time to describe the relative lull in activity between the fall of Poland in 1939 and the resumption of German advances in the spring of 1940. It didn't imply that nothing was happening, just a relative lull in operations.
