The only good geo-political reason for invading Iraq was that it eliminated the need to have U.S. troops based in Saudi Arabia, which is seen as a major sacrilege in much of the Muslim world. Occupying Iraq isn’t much better from the Arab perspective, but removing infidel troops from Islam’s Holy Land would take the edge off of much of the anger.

So why haven’t we announced that we’re going to pull out, and soon? There was some speculation about this in the months before the war, then nothing. We should’ve made an announcement at the start of the invasion. I really hope that the Bush administration isn’t so stupid that it plans to stay, and if it is, that the Saudis will save us from ourselves.
