"We've had a great deal of success in dealing with Al-Qaeda, something like 3,000 Al-Qaeda operatives have either been killed or apprehended over the last 18 months, but there are still others left."
CANBERRA, Australia -- AFP
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer blamed Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network on Tuesday for the bomb attacks that claimed at least three lives and wounded 50 in Saudi Arabia.
Downer said the Australian government had become more concerned about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, and had adjusted its travel advisory to warn of the risk.
The buildings targeted by the explosions accommodate mostly American and British nationals and none of the 3,000 Australians now in Saudi Arabia is believed to have been among the casualties.
"Our impression is that it is likely to be an al-Qaeda operation, particularly as there has been some forewarning of a possible al-Qaeda attack in Saudi Arabia," Downer said.
