Have you tried the compact layout in Settings? I tried it out in 800x600 just now, and in compact layout there's just enough room for everything. C'mon, man, I designed compact specifically for you!
I talked to Justin on the phone this afternoon, and he hates the dark tweed background too. You got the Boss on your side with this one! Justin's going to get his feet wet tinkering with the site by changing that soon, so stay tuned.
