No, you're not alone at all Fox. I regularly keep my setting at 800x600. I find the text size easier to work with for longer periods. I also find that most websites have been designed for 800x600. Other settings leave too much blank or wasted space - or space that gets filled up with ads.
Robert has really outdone himself with the boards. I am loathe to niggle as I know the old adage about the donkey the father and his son, and don't want to be one of the spectators giving advice.
I think the legibility issues are also monitor specific. Older monitors will find the background irritating and diffused, while fresher monitors have less difficulty with color bleed, etc. On one of my monitors HZ looks brilliant and crisp and on another it looks sun-faded. A solid color background is probably the solution for all monitors.
The reply button, etc. are off the screen sometimes in 800x600 - but only in certain conditions and I haven't figured out what those are yet - as right now it's perfectly fitting. It maybe that when you reply to a post and when you initiate a thread it has slightly different settings. But hitting F11 briefly to type in one's name and click the post after composing a message are not a problem for me and I had gotten used to it.
All in all, the zone can never be all things for all people and compromises must be made.
One of the things I noticed is that at first links popped up within the same window as the multi-windowed zone itself and now are brought into new windows. I liked the in-window version but realize it probably complicated navigation for some folks unfamiliar with the use of the "back" button on their browser.
