BTW, nobody's commented on a satisfying fix of a longstanding problem, but I guess that's par for the course--you don't notice the pain when it goes away. See how the BLOCKQUOTE at the start of this message begins at the first character? No bogus <!

I have gotten in the habit of sticking an extra space before the first < so that the bogus character never showed, so I guess I would not have noticed that fix either.
