Barry DiGregorio's book _Mars: the Living Planet_,
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1883319587/102-4014776-6705736
, was the first book to scientifically argue that the Viking missions
suggested life on Mars. It might still be the only book to present
this argument scientifically.
This conclusion is still unproven but the pace of missions to Mars
suggests we will have an answer to this question within 1 to 2
decades.
If Gil Levin's theories as presented in Barry's book are proven
correct, then Barry's book will be regarded as a classic as being the
first, and perhaps only book, that reached this conclusion by a
scientific review of the evidence.
But even if there is proven no life on Mars it will still reach
classic status when scientists look back at prior theories for Mars
life and the scientific treatises for such. It will be regarded as the
pinnacle of books that presented such theories.
