The SARS virus is somewhat unique in that it utilizes the bodies own immune response to kill. The atypical pneumonia that sets in and the strangulation of oxygen from the lungs is not the result of a mucus congestion but rather a reaction of the blood swelling into the lung tissue strangling the alveoli and making oxygen absorption too difficult.
This is why blood type is so important. Each blood type has its own signature and characteristics. If one were to design a race-specific killer disease the first place one would look would be at unique polymorphisms specific to the targets. For example the folks with hemoglobin S suffer from sickle cell anemia, while those with both S and A are protected from malaria due to the unique combination of the hemoglobin and how it reacts to the malaria antigen. This is a clearcut example of how certain bloodtypes can protect one from viral infections. I'll come back to this point later because it is very important.
If the SARS coronavirus is an antigen which might go unnoticed and completely removed by antibodies without incident in one population yet in another cause serious atypical pneumonia - well then you have a race-based killer disease. Whether this was a freak occurence of nature, an accident, or an escaped project from a Russian research lab is one serious question one has to ask oneself.
The former USSR always had much to fear from the huge masses of Chinese people on their souther borders, it in no way stretches my imagination to believe that they could easily have been involved in very race-specific biowarfare projects.
Now imagine an antigen which causes atypical pneumonia, via the immune response in a very select polymorphic range of blood types - yet with just the presence of another allele it SAR is just as harmless as the common cold. You have then created the perfect "race-specific" blackmail tool.
Or...if I were as cynical as Lindy - I might imagine a drug company concocted this coronavirus themselves in order to sell SARS drugs to the BILLION plus fearful Chinese and asians it seems to primarily affect. Either possibility is somewhat sickening and offends my sense of decency, but I am not deluded enough to exclude such human debasement.
Proof? I have no proof, and since I do not have access to the large CDC computer base of victims and bloodtypes to pull important data from it shall remain my own working hypothesis. I certainly hope someone else out there has entertained the same thoughts, for I would feel very bad if I have been sitting on ideas and treatment avenues no one else has thought of or tried yet.
If anyone is out there involved in this and reading this post I would suggest experimenting with SARS on very specific blood types and also in transfusing antibodies from folks with resistance to the SARS antigen. The swelling reaction of the lungs could theoretically be stopped cold by a transfusion with an allele which immediately negates the reaction. Naturally, one will have to experiment with the most compatible blood types to avoid other adverse reactions before experimenting on actual victims. Once SARS is contained and new antibodies are created which don't react aversely it is likely the patients own blood will record this antibody antigen and be able to produce it on its own - hopefully with such success as if the person had been vaccinated for SARS.
The steroid cocktail used now is short term and doesn't treat the disease - only a reaction.

Of course, then again Lindy may be right and my sanity is to be questioned because I see WMD in Iraq or as you insinuated I am really awaiting the Yetis arrival in a UFO because I realize the presence and significance of the vortical motion of energy all around us.
That's always a possibility. But I doubt it. ;-)
