-blush-
I forgot about Poland's political condition for most of the 19th century. That's what comes of living next door to Poles for most of my childhood: the thought that Poland was not a state for all that time, when it's been so visible a nation to me, seldom occurs.
On your other points: The two-front war was the height of dumbth. The way that Germany "defeated" Russia was by fomenting revolution that played on the unrest of the peasants when they realized the paper money used by the Tsar's government to finance the war was worth exactly nothing. Lenin, having been smuggled into Russia through German territory, offered an armistice to Germany after his Bolsheviks took control of Russia from the tottering Kerensky government.
And if the French threat was in reality no threat, why were the Germans dumb enough to attack them?
If the Kaiser had kept his pants on and let the Russians attack, the defensive Allied treaties would have been abrogated, and he could have whupped Russia in single combat at his leisure. But NOOOOOO....
