Bush refuses to kiss U.N. ass
Bush has committed the worst offense one can ever commit on a bureaucrat: giving them the impression that you don't think the sun shines out of their rear ends. I've dealt with plenty of bureaucrats, and this is universal.
This is why the U.N. is pissed.
And had Bush come crawling on his knees, offering them the power and piece of the action they want? Would they have then come up with money and troops? Dream on.
...world leaders and nearly all his Democratic presidential rivals accused Bush of being responsible for the postwar difficulties in bypassing the United Nations to launch the war that ousted Saddam Hussein.
Would somebody finally PLEASE answer this question? Had we gone into Iraq and ousted Saddam under the glorious blue flag of the U.N. and with the blessings of mighty France and Germany, what exactly would be different or better now?
Would fewer civilians have been killed in the initial battles? Would the dumb bombs of France and Germany done less damage? Would Turkey have opened a northern front if France had asked?
And after major combat was ended, would the Baathists have decided it would be naughty to bomb and shoot U.N. troops? Would French and German techs have fixed Baghdad's lights any faster than American techs? Would the saboteurs have decided against bombing oil pipelines? Would terrorists stop flowing over the borders?
Would the situation in Iraq right now be any different at all?
Yeah, it would be different. The guerilla fighting would be far fiercer. The Baathists know from long worldwide experience that U.N. troops under direct attack will run shrieking like little girls. Their tactics would reflect this.
