Actually Dan...

...not a single medical doctor who has ever actually physically examined Ms. Schiavo has ever expressed the opinion that she could recover. Some of the dozens of doctors who have examined her were court appointed, mutually agreed to by both parties to the dispute. All stated that her brain is permanently damaged, that she would never recover, she has no consciousness, and that she is in a persistent vegetative state. These claims have been examined and verified by 19 different courts.

As for claims about no rehabilitation. That isn't true either. Early in her care, there was a considerably investment made towards rehabilitation, all to no avail, including an agressive experimental procedure intended to stimulate brain function and residency in Mediplex, a special rehabilitation facility that specializes in severe brain injuries. He attempted swallowing therapies to get her to eat on her own. And for several he had hired full time private duty aide to take her on trips outside the hospice to attempt to stimulate her.

After seven years of desperate searches for anything that might change her condition, the death of his mother helped him finally accept that his wife would never recover and it was time seek authorization to remove life support and let her body follow her spirit.
