re: What costs more: Building the house, or building the utilities?

A road to your driveway, water mains, power transmission and generation -- paid for by taxes. Compare how much you pay for your mortgage to how much you pay in taxes. Different things have been privatized with little success, and mostly it's all paid for by taxes. An imbalance in prompt service between private and public healthcare can be accounted for by a difference in purchasing power between currencies, especially when equipment is not manufactured domestically. If it weren't for the strong American currency the same problem might occur there. The strong currency is due to investor confidence that their money will be safe, protected by the enormous American military, also paid for by American taxes.

Government money is good. Just because you have a few government-run agencies doesn't mean you don't live in a democracy. And it doesn't mean things aren't being done in the most effective manner possible.
