If that's true, then why has the US gone to war at all?

The administration's comments suggest we went to war to remake the region. If Cheney's predictions were any indication, they thought it would be relatively easy to install a pro-American democracy in Iraq. The lessons of Vietnam were lost on them and now others are paying the price.
