Re: Vatican Church sued for child molestation

You're preaching to the choir, VB.
Personally, all religions are rather sketchy as far as I'm concerned, and all the monotheistic ones seem to have a mean streak running through them.

I have no problem with the idea of a Supreme Being(s), that's no more ridiculous than the alternatives cosmology and particle physics have suggested, but once people start telling me they know what God wants me to do my reaction is one of total skepticism. And when they start describing His attributes in excruciating detail I
haven't the slightest hesitation in declaring it total BS.

The idea of Catholicism as a two thousand year old unbroken and uninterrupted politico/philosophical system appeals to me, sort of like the Bene Gesserit in "Dune", but the rest of the program is just Medieval ritual overlaid on top of Bronze Age superstition and tribal voodoo.

As for the sexual aspect we're discussing, I have no idea what could cause it. I can understand priests having secret girlfriends, even families on the side, enforced sexual deprivation never works. (It didn't work in high school either, remember.)

Pedophilia was quite common in the classical world, in both Rome and Greece, and presumably throughout the Mediterranean and Hellenistic world of the early church, although it was totally forbidden by the Jews. Maybe that has something to do with it.

In the Middle Ages, heterosexual priests and their mistresses (and even families) were winked at, which is one of the reasons that lunatic Martin Luther got so much traction. But why it should lead to pedophilia does not necessarily follow. And we still don't know if the pedophilia is caused by celibacy, or if celibacy attracts pedophiles. That is a crucial difference and should be investigated.
