Because of the structure of church services, and the role of priests in the liturgy, the opportunities for these crimes are probably higher than in other venues.
But the question remains, why do so many highly educated, presumably spiritual and dedicated men, part of a 2000 year old organization dedicated to morality and virtue, wind up like this? That observation begs for a causal mechanism of some sort.
It's sort of like finding a Wiccan coven at CERN.
