Even if I was to concede that Bush has been a terrible failure as President (Something that I won't concede), I think Kerry still has an uphill battle.
Kerry must explain why he/Kerry would be less of a failure under the same circumstances. It isn't enough that Kerry is just someone/anyone "other than Bush".
That's a much more difficult task than it sounds. It means that Kerry must take solid stands on many controversial issues: Even if it means that the other side can use them against him. So far, Kerry hasn't done that.
So while Kerry can give me reasons not to vote for Bush, he can't give me any reasons to vote for Kerry. (For example: What will Kerry do to save the lives of our soldiers in Iraq? A vague/nuanced referral of responsibility to the UN just doesn't win on this issue.)
Given that choice, I'll stay with the devil I know. And in most elections, the incumbent wins because the majority of voters come to the same conclusion.

P.S. Kerry is running his campaign as if he is the incumbent Ie. as if his record stands for itself and he (not Bush) is on Defense. I can't decide if that is because of arrogance or because Kerry has been in the Senate so long that he has forgotten how to campaign as a non-incumbent.
