Majority, my hind leg. A vast majority of Alaskan residents support drilling in parts of ANWR, and they live there.

As for the rest of the nation:

Note that the poll appears to predate Bush's election, which may or may not be a mitigating factor in either direction. Gas prices were a lot lower then, too.

This is heavy-duty interest-group pressure in Washington, and the politically-driven goal of the Democrats of not handing Bush even a small energy policy victory. The majority, and objectivity, have nothing to do with it.
