Questions about French participation in WW2

France was on both sides of the conflict; first with the Allies, then with the Axis, then with the Allies again.

1. Did more French fight FOR or AGAINST the Allies?
2. Did more French die fighting FOR or AGAINST the Allies?

Does anybody know?
