Heh, heh.

France was in the same position Iraq is in now. They were occupied by an army which had invaded illegally, was immune from French law, used French prisons to torture people, exacted retribution from families of resistors, paid informers, etc.

There were more Germans, however, invovled in the occupation than Americans in Iraq. So resistance as in Iraq wasn't possible.

They resisted as best they could under the circumstances. See, no patriot likes an occupation army or Quisling government. The French didn't, the Hungarians didn't, the Czechs didn't, the Bulgarians didn't, and so on. It appears that patriotic Iraqis don't, either, doesn't it.

Asking that question instead of looking up the answer wasn't the brightest move. You were probably hoping for someone to say the French were busy shooting Allies in the back.

(And one of these folks probably will. Heck, France is probably the most civilized nation in the world at the moment. Told that to a German at a party about two weeks ago, and he agreed. That surprised me.)
