The troops themselves don't get to direct military policy. They were ordered to go.
They don't get to resign and go home. Unlike other jobs, once they sign up, that's it.
If they had had a vote, and said, "Let's go invade Iraq", you would have a point.
As it was, they were ordered to war on a publicly stated premise that was, to put it kindly, not correct.
Their mission has been changed to suit the circumstances. They still die because they still have to be there to clear up the mess made because of the mistake that sent them there in the first place. The stupidity of the leadership does not reflect on the courage of the troops under their command.
Merely to count the dead may be considered a form of dishonor, because it makes them into tic marks on a ledger. Are you suggesting they be listed by name?
