Or perhaps you didn't know that the parallel has been drawn here, ad nauseam, between WWII and the war on terror. In that case, the intuitive leap is outside your experience here, and I apologize.

"Intervention" is joining a conflict to which you have not been "invited", either by attack or declaration. It's also sometimes used by the Tough Love people and the deprogramming people to describe an assortment of strategies, ranging from group confrontation to kidnapping, to deal with behavioral problems among individuals.

Please excuse me if your reference was not intended to equate the circumstances of the invasion of Europe with those of the invasion of Iraq. We've been arguing about it for days, and it's been on my mind, so that's where I took your reference.
