It longs to smash rocks, dig dirt, pound in tent pegs, sound phonolites, play golf, taste the ozone of the quickly propagating crack, shoot sparks, bounce off a hip, dance about the back of the truck on a dusty road, break interfering branches, pound in sample tags, crack walnuts, smash a thumb, smash a spider, tap a chisel, test the hardness of both rock and mineral, to be used the assist an ascent of a steep slope, arrest a slide, threaten wildlife, or to settle a disagreement.
Mine's rustier, by the way. At least the small one...it doesn't get used as much. Maybe it should retire to an argon crypt, but it's good for some duties. The long handle hammer's been working, and it's deformed end testifies to the dues it has paid. The 4 pound mallet shows less wear, but not from lack of duty. It's painted red so I don't leave it behind. Which I've done before, accidentally-on-purpose, 'cause the damn thing weighs four pounds. But it gets the job done with a single swing. The 12 pound sledge stays in the truck, to be called upon when nothing else will do.
