When one has countless books handy one can choose a volume of sizable girth. For various bugs different volumes and bindings are desirable:
Flies: Flexible and fast binding books such as newspapers and thin paperback bound books (preferably with laminated covers for easy fly gut removal)
Crickets: Any heavy solid book can be dropped on these dumb insects (again laminated covers are preferable) Dropping method versus swatting reduces cricket gut spilling.
Tough shelled Beetles and spiders of Austrailian origin: Encyclopedias (The one volume Columbia encyclopedia or an old Lincoln Library do nicely) Ten pounds dropped from a height of two feet or so crush the insides of the bug on impact with its own shell leaving little mess. In an emergency the unabridged Websters dictionary from 1930 with it's 20 pounds can be used to eliminate BOUR and ROUS.*
