Current Events » in reply to Most nuclear experts agree that a breeder cycle is required to make long-term nuclear power practical.

So, we see that we have the old "bait and switch" trick being used.

There is not enough uranium for massive deployment of light water reactors (LWR). But we are told how safe they are. AFTER we are committed to the LWR, then they say, "Sorry, but we need the breeder now."

The breeder is a machine to use U238 in addition to U235 used by the LWR. The breeder MUST have a core of highly enriched (bomb-capable) material. Please explain these to me:

1. Since the breeder is vastly MORE expensive thant the LWR, how does it seem to be economical? Even the French Phoenix is prohibitively expensive, which is why it is not being serially produced.

2. How is non-proliferation going to work when every country has reactors containing 97% enriched breeder cores?

3. How can we be certain that a reactor containing bomb-capable fuel will not fail catastrophically?

4. The ONLY breeder that the USA ever built (Enrico Fermi plant, Detroit) had a fatal melt-down. Does that make it promising for safety?

5. Why should we waste money on dangerous crap like the breeder when safe alternatives such as Sea Solar Power are capable of producing electricity at a small fraction of the cost?

The whole nuclear power business is a ripoff. Nobody has ever built or operated a nuclear plant without a massive government subsidy to cover the costs. You should get off the nuclear bandwagon because it is a fraud.
