Current Events » in reply to This just in: academia packed solidly with liberals

Tom, calm down.... breathe deep... now try to think rationally

I have been interviewed, and done interviews- politics iss never brought up...

"yes, your resume looks great, Mr smith, can you tell me who you voted for?"

Never saw that happen...

Sometimes, rarely, you can pick up on a persons political leanings in idle conversation in an interview, but you don't let it sway you... If you are experienced at interviewing then you know employers dont care about much more than if you can do the job well... You make it sound like we get together after we all meet an applicant and discuss his politics. It just doesnt work like that- not here, and not in universities.

It IS true that in the places I have worked at so far the people I worked with were predominantly leaning to the left- but it isnt due to some liberal litmus test... Think about it, Tom, how many people have the qualifications to become a professor in a given subject? Not a lot... universities cant really afford to add political ideology to the qualification test.

Again you are playing the victim... kinda lame at this point

The fault isnt with academia, and it isnt that all republicans are stupid, I personally think it IS due to priorities... Academia is not some big financial bonanza, trust me- you make lots more in industry- I know of a guy that wrote a 400 page thesis in general relativity and ended up working at ATT for a larger salary than I am likely to make anytime soon- or ever...

Priorities matter, but honestly, Tom , We libs dont discriminate when it comes to hiring
in general, I am sure some do, just as you must admit that some right wingers do the same- I think it is the exception to the rule.

Imagine... you desperately need to have a position filled- you get 3 applicants, and 2 are unqualified the third is perfect but is a radical liberal.... would you turn the third down? if yes then you are guilty as the imaginary persecutors you talk about, if no then cant you believe that other professionals act the same way?
