your myopic vision. The delight you saw on the campus at the end of Vietnam was a delight in the defeat of our troops in an unwinnable war. It was delight at the end of a nightmare in which we went to war for the wrong reasons, possibly on the wrong side, because we as a nation suffered from poor leadership at the time.
Eisenhower demurred from entering this war even though he was urged to do so by Dulles.
Kennedy screwed up by sending in "advisors" but still held back on escalation. To enter in a war because the French were being defeated should be de facto considered a mistake.
No one wants to see our troops killed, or even put in harms way. Most Americans want our country to be on the side of right and justice. Leadership has the job of articulating our position. Our present leadership has not done this. In Viet Nam our leadership could not do it.
