In the 40's the French government was the Petain government. The French military fired on American troops and shipping.

French policy has long dictated there are no moral issues, no international issues, only French issues.

French Indo-China was a mistake. It was a feeble attempt to belong to the Club of Nations With Colonial Empires, sorta like tiny Portugal in Angola. To defend colonialism was wrong in Viet Nam, or anywhere.
