I can't think of any near term greater creation than a second habitable world in our own solar system.
Geez, we can't even get supplies up to the ISS .. and the Apollo missions WERE highly risky, with all sorts of unknowns, like lunar dust scratching the visors and getting into spacesuit joints .. that's why even getting to Mars IS a really big deal, and VERY dangerous. I'd be ecstatic but suprised if the first mission made it back here alive, quite frankly.
We are overreaching ourselves with this present talk of terraforming - even though it may happen in the future, and even granting your good point about the creativity of humanity. Really, it will stretch all our creativity just to get to Mars and back, right now. And so, such talk of terraforming, escaping possible threats, etc. may all be valid in the long term, but it won't motivate us to get out there RIGHT NOW.

Ok, that's true. But it's too far-future for our present purposes
