Directed evolution doesn't have to mean there's a god.
Evolution could be directed by life itself. I believe that organisms do play a role in the evolution of their species with a form of biofeedback. Over generations a species will adapt its genome based on signals being received through a whole host of physiological stimuli. In that regard, I think that Lamarck will be proven right over the coming decades.
