Albert Einstein started out as a secular German Jew who made comments like:
"Gott wuerfelt nicht." = "God does not play dice."
Einstein also started out with a nineteenth century view of the Universe being a deterministic mechanism (this fits nicely with believing in God). The notion of quantum theory requiring the most basic phenomena to be driven by probability was an abomination in Einstein's nineteenth century view. With the exception of celestial mechanics, nothing reproduces experimental evidence better than quantum theory (it's validity is irrefutable). To Einstein's everlasting credit, he was too good of a scientist to reject quantum theory even though it contradicted his basic understanding of the Universe and religious beliefs. When he realized his basic understanding was wrong, he rejected the notion of God. Einstein died an atheist. IMHO, Einstein was deceived by his emotions. He should have died an agnostic. In my opinion there is no contradiction between the Universe being an artifact and the validity of quantum theory.
