re: "Intelligent Design"

"Intelligent design," or the idea that the world is so complex or oddly-constructed that it could not possibly have occured without someone "designing" it, still falls apart at the first level of analysis.

Whether you postulate the existence of a creator God, or all-powerful alien beings (the latter somehow more palatable to a lot of people than God is), you still have to answer the question about how something complex enough to create worlds came to be. It's a very basic question.

As Lileks' little girl asked him, "but who borned God?"

Children seem to outgrow the hard logic they learn from their surroundings, and I suppose the rest is beaten out of them in universities.

The "turtles all the way down" flaw in the "intelligent design" argument does not invalidate the existence of God, but on the other hand, if one accepts eternal order in that area, there is no logical reason not to accept that the order naturally present in the universe, particularly on the physics, atomic and chemical level, also "always was that way."
