Didn't look like a chickenhead to me, I can see that now from the photo angle. I almost took a picture myself but decided not to bother - I was in a hurry to start backpacking.
The flowers are spectacular, even better than they were after the '97-'98 El Nino rains. Death Valley is definitely a Top 10 place to go to in California outside of the summer months. Makes a non-geologist like me want to learn about all the beautiful rock formations, if nothing else.
